The Alertus software was designed for typical enterprise environments with 10,000+ computers. The number of clients that the Alertus server can handle simultaneously is dependent on 2 primary factors: the configured Alertus Desktop client polling interval and the server CPU(s) (combination of speed and number of processors). Generally the faster the CPU processing speed and the lower the polling interval, the greater the number of clients that can be supported. In this case we recommend setting a variable polling interval and installing the server software on a physical or virtual server meeting the following system requirements:
- Operating System: Windows Server 2003 or 2008 (IIS Disabled)
- 2.4 Ghz Dual Core (or better) processor
- 2GB or more of memory
- At least 20GB of free hard disk space on the C drive.
- LAN connectivity of 100MB is required (For 10,000 units with a 30 second polling interval the system requires an average of 333 Kbs per second)
Unfortunately since every server and network environment is different, determining server requirements is an inexact science. If possible, we recommend using a server with higher requirements if you plan to add more Alertus Desktop clients in the future or add other Alertus devices such as Alert Beacons or Digital Signage Override software in the future. This will ensure the system is stable and prevent the need to migrate the server down the road. Lastly. when using a variable polling interval we strongly recommend changing the Target CPU Minimum and Maximum values as appropriate.
