PA & Fire Alarm Audio TTS
Pre-recorded messages fall short of empowering people with specific information. Unrehearsed live voice is onerous and challenging in the stress of a crisis situation and often comes across unintelligible when amplified. New text-to-speech technology developed by Alertus overcomes these challenges.
The Alertus Voice PA and Fire Alarm Audio Interface utilizes breakthrough text-to-speech (TTS) technology that is embedded in a compact PCB module to fit inside most fire alarm audio control panels, public address systems, outdoor giant voice speaker systems, or standalone indoor/outdoor speaker enclosures. In each of these applications, the TTS module is usually fed emergency messages from an Alert Beacon. The Alertus TTS solution leverages the latest in voice synthesis technology to deliver fully customizable spoken alert messages in real time.
Benefits
- Cost Effective: Leverages existing infrastructure
- Multimodal enabling: Unifies and streamlines multimodal mass notification by incorporating in-building voice via a simple, straightforward interface serving a wide range of voice paging, public address, and fire alarm audio systems
- Reliable: Embedded module is not dependent on off-site servers to process text-to-speech, eliminating critical fail point
- ADA accessibility: option to incorporate Alert Beacons to serve deaf and hard-of-hearing without any infrastructure upgrades and changes in processes
- Flexible: Remote activation from anywhere
- Empowering: Custom messages with specific empowering information, preferred over pre-recorded message which only convey limited detail and cannot serve every situation
- Easy: Text-to-speech voice annunciation assists dispatchers who may be under pressure during a crisis situation activate speakers without the challenges of live voice
- Intelligibility: Higher message intelligibility factor than spoken live voice
- Interoperable: Unifies mass notification between new construction projects built with a voice system and older facilities retrofitted with Alertus Beacons, digital signage override, and desktop alert
Fire Alarm Audio TTS Interface

Most high rise buildings greater than seven stories are equipped with a fire alarm audio system. Increasingly, new public buildings of all types are being equipped with voice notification. Alertus can help you maximize this valuable asset as part of your comprehensive mass notification system by providing a text-to-speech “bridge” to enable:
- Empowering custom alert messages instead of prerecorded messages
- Higher intelligibility through text-to-speech instead of unrehearsed live voice
- Unified facility activation, yet fully zoneable
- Remote activation without physically being at a specific location or even on-site at all
- Streamlined multimodal mass notification by connecting third-party personal messaging systems and wide area notification with in-building emergency communications systems
- Automated alerts from Alertus ThreatWatch service, which monitors for severe weather and selectable warning sources

Voice Public Address TTS Interface
Government buildings and schools are often equipped with voice public address systems. However, these facilities are scattered across a wide geographic area without any unified control capability. Alertus’s technology can enable centralized command and control of these individual voice systems, however different. Consequently, all or specific zones or types of facilities can be activated with ease, within seconds, from anywhere.
Most campuses, bases, and other large facilities have limited public address capabilities in only a handful of buildings. Nevertheless, where available, these systems represent a valuable asset in a comprehensive mass notification approach. The Alertus TTS module makes it easy to link these voice systems with Alertus Beacons mounted in buildings without voice infrastructure.
Holistically, the Alertus TTS module enables emergency communications to be connected with multimodal mass notification components such as personal messaging and wide area.

Standalone TTS Speaker

The Alertus TTS module is a smart peripheral which connects to the Alert Beacon via a RS-232 serial port. When issuing an alert notification, dispatchers may choose to use spoken output in addition to the standard activation options such as strobes and sirens. The Alert Beacon then passes the message text to the TTS module, and the spoken message plays automatically through the connected audio speakers. When utilized, standalone speakers are typically at select locations.
