A Holistic Approach to Assessing Emergency Notification Systems.

Sarah Deslile, ABCP, Emergency Planning Officer, McGill University

Sarah works with colleagues across McGill University to promote comprehensive emergency planning and preparedness. Sarah strongly believes community collaboration and risk-based, all-hazards planning are essential for promoting disaster resilience. This conviction developed from her personal experience of the 1998 Ice Storm in Quebec, and through her work as a Municipal Recovery Liaison with the Government of Alberta for the 2013 Southern Alberta floods and the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires.

In addition to Incident Command System, Emergency Operations Centre, and business continuity training, Sarah holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Disaster and Emergency Studies from Brandon University and a Master’s Degree in Geography from McGill. She is a member of the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM), the Association de sécurité civile du Québec (ASCQ), and the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA).


Managing Bomb threats and other hoaxes

Darren Dumoulin, Assistant Director of Security, Concordia University

At Concordia, Darren has occupied the positions of Security Operations Manager, Senior Advisor on Emergency Management, Risk and Insurance Portfolio Manager and is currently the Assistant Director of Security.  He oversees the universities security operations on Concordia’s two campuses, as well as the emergency management and fire prevention sectors. Darren was also a fire fighter and emergency medial first responder for 18 years


Alex Polkki, FMA, Facilities Manager, Marianopolis College

Countdown to Lockdown: A Case Study in Emergency Preparedness Management at the CEGEP Level

Alex Polkki, FMA, Facilities Manager, Marianopolis College

Alex’s many roles as Facilities Manager at Marianopolis College since 2010 include Emergency Response Coordinator and Head of Security. A leader in the development and implementation of the College’s first Emergency Response Plan, Alex coordinates emergency preparedness training and assists in crisis management planning. His goal is to constantly improve the safety and security of the Marianopolis community, and believes that communication and collaboration are cornerstones of successful emergency management.


Alertus Mass Notification System Overview

Eric Keen, Regional Account Manager, Alertus Technologies

Eric Keen is a Regional Account Manager for the Higher Education Sales team for Alertus Technologies. In this role he is a sales consultant with Higher Education schools in Canada as well as Washington, Oregon and Alaska. His goal is to help schools acquire the necessary software and hardware to build a robust emergency notification system, and integrate with their existing infrastructure to maximize coverage and keep costs within budget.

He has 10 years of experience in sales working with small businesses on growing their overall sales and operating better businesses through consultation work. He’s performed dozens of Continuous Improvement consultations to help grow profitability and set roadmaps of how to accomplish goals set during these events. He was an All-American track athlete while attending the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater where he graduated with a degree in Statistical Mathematics and a minor in Business Finance.
