Amcor is a global leader in the development and production of sustainable consumer packaging and dispensing solutions, producing a variety of materials for the consumer goods and healthcare sectors. In total, Amcor employs over 75,000 employees across 400 locations globally. While a global giant, Amcor is committed to fostering safe, healthy workplaces that operate with local autonomy. This independence allows individual sites the flexibility to implement safety improvements tailored to their specific environments.
Challenge
In 2024, Jacob Lautenschlager, EHS Manager at the New London, Wisconsin site, identified a critical need to upgrade the facility’s mass notification system. The plant—which employs 150 people—is located on a county line and was frequently plagued by irrelevant weather alerts meant for the adjacent county.
“It was important to find a system with the logic to identify and report weather conditions pertaining specifically to our location,” said Lautenschlager. “Our goal was to use automation to filter out irrelevant data and minimize alert fatigue from frequent, non-applicable notifications.”
The Environment: The "Lake Effect" Risk
Located near Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin’s largest inland lake, Amcor’s New London site faces a unique "lake effect" that generates rapid temperature shifts, shifting winds, and unpredictable severe weather.
Solution
Automated, Site-Specific Precision
With the ThreatWatcher integration, the Amcor safety team can monitor critical weather events specifically for their location.
To manage these conditions, Lautenschlager’s team implemented Alertus ThreatWatcher™, an automated service providing real-time, site-specific monitoring. By integrating ThreatWatcher with AlertAware®, Amcor established a unified, multi-channel response—simultaneously triggering SMS, voice, and email notifications while broadcasting emergency audio across the facility’s legacy PA system.
The Impact: Targeted Readiness
The primary driver for selecting the Alertus System was its ability to provide automated, coordinate-based alerting. This ensures that the 150 employees at the New London plant only receive notifications that directly impact their safety. When the Midwest enters peak severe weather season this spring, the Amcor New London safety team is fully equipped to leverage these real-time capabilities, ensuring a faster, more accurate response to local threats.
