Common Alerting Protocol (CAP)

The Alertus System was designed with a focus on web standard interoperability and compatibility. We are proud to be one of the first companies to support version 1.2 of the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) specification, and we are committed to supporting all future releases.

When the Alertus System processes a CAP file, it constructs and disseminates a detailed alert notification using the core CAP fields (i.e., identifier, duration, headline, description, etc.). Users can set up and configure multiple alert profiles that are activated when a received CAP alert meets the specified urgency/severity/certainty criteria. If the CAP alert specifies a geographic area, only devices located within that area will be activated.

Compatible Inbound Integrators

  • Alertus API: Alertus uses SOAP and REST APIs to enable third-party systems to communicate with the Alertus system (the preferred inbound integration method for single-point activation).

  • Inbound CAP: Allows the processing of Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) 1.1 and 1.2 alerts. This provides a standard, compliant way to exchange public warning and emergency data between commercial and government third-party alerting systems.

  • Fire Panel Control: Composed of both hardware and software technology, this integration monitors local fire panels and launches alerts when qualifying events are reported.

  • ThreatWatcher: Monitor FEMA’s Emergency Alert System (EAS) feed, the National Weather Service’s alert feed (select counties and forecast zones), and any RSS or ATOM syndication feed, to launch alerts when alerts are issued.

Integrated Public Alert Warning System (IPAWS)

Alertus integrates with FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS). This integration allows the Alertus System to launch alerts/notifications when CAP alerts are posted to one or more Collaborative Operating Groups (COGs). With this integration, you can share alert data across affiliated organizations and state/municipal alerting authorities.

FEMA has also leveraged a variety of cutting edge, in-building emergency notification capabilities provided by Alertus, including the Alert Beacon®, text-to-speech voice annunciator, digital signage override, and Alertus Desktop Notification computer alerting.
