UNC-Chapel Hill Successfully Activates Alertus System in Response to Campus Shooting

A clip of a video reporting on a deadly shooting at UNC-Chapel Hill with an emergency alert showing on screens across campus.

On August 28, 2023, a shooting was reported at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Caudill Laboratories. The incident prompted university leadership to activate Alert Carolina sirens within minutes of the report and distribute an Alert Carolina notification to students and staff via all alerting endpoints, with a warning of an armed and dangerous person on or near campus. Campus security officials quickly launched the initial notification with critical information and followed up with additional instructions – keys to communicating effectively and mitigating harm.

UNC-Chapel Hill implemented the Alertus System for emergency activation and response in 2018 to power its Alert Carolina System and distribute emergency notifications across campus.
